What is server software?

Every computer runs an operating system that controls the hardware and lets programs run on it. A desktop usually runs Windows or macOS, while the vast majority of servers, whether a VPS or a dedicated machine in a cloud data center, run a Linux distribution such as Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, or Fedora. The distribution decides how the machine is managed, updated, and secured, which is why server administrators care about which one they use.

A game server works the same way one level up. On top of the operating system, it runs dedicated server software that actually hosts the game. For Minecraft, that software is what you install and swap on this page, and, like operating systems, it comes in several types that each prioritize something different: raw compatibility, plugin support, mods, or performance.

What are the different Minecraft server types?

Vanilla is Mojang's official server, with no modification layer at all: no plugin API and no mod loader. It is the unaltered baseline that every other Java Edition type is forked from. CraftBukkit and Spigot add a plugin API, so you can extend the server with plugins without editing the game's code. Paper is a faster fork of Spigot that fixes bugs and adds heavy performance optimizations while staying compatible with Spigot and Bukkit plugins.

For mods rather than plugins, Forge and Fabric are the two main platforms: Forge powers most large modpacks, while Fabric is lighter and updates quickly to new releases. Purpur extends Paper with extra configuration and gameplay options. Bedrock Edition is a separate product that runs none of the Java software above, but Mojang's own Bedrock Dedicated Server, which is why console, phone, and Windows players connect to a Bedrock server instead of a Java one. Each of these is a different piece of software for the same game.

Which server type should you use?

Match the type to what you want to run. For the pure, unmodified game, choose Vanilla. To add plugins for economy, permissions, mini-games, or world protection, choose Paper, which gives you the plugin ecosystem of Spigot with far better performance. For a modded experience or a modpack, use Forge or Fabric depending on which the mods require. For cross-play with console and mobile players, you need Bedrock.

The most common choice for public servers is Paper, because plugins cover almost everything a community needs and the performance gains matter as soon as more than a handful of players are online. Modded communities run Forge or Fabric, and purists stay on Vanilla.

Which Minecraft server software is the most optimized?

Paper is the baseline for performance, and several forks push it further. Purpur adds more optimization and configuration on top of Paper, and Pufferfish tunes it for high player counts. Both keep full Paper plugin compatibility, so you gain performance without leaving the plugin ecosystem. Folia goes further with regionized multithreading, running different regions of the world on different CPU cores for very large servers, but because of that model it needs plugins written specifically for Folia rather than standard Paper ones.

Optimized software matters most on limited resources, which is exactly the case on a free or entry-level plan. The same hardware can hold noticeably more players on Paper or Purpur than on Vanilla, because the fork spends less CPU and memory doing the same work. Pairing an optimized server type with a right-sized plan is the cheapest way to reduce lag.

Why does the Minecraft version number matter?

Alongside the server type, every server runs a specific Minecraft version, such as 1.8.9, 1.20.1, or the latest release. By default, players connect with the same version the server runs, so the version you choose decides who can join without extra tools like ViaVersion. It also decides which features exist in the world and which plugins and mods will work, because most are built for a specific version range.

Some versions are chosen on purpose. Competitive PvP communities often stay on 1.8.9 for its combat mechanics, while creative and survival servers usually track the newest release for the latest blocks and features.

Whenever you install a mod or plugin, match it to your server's version. A file built for the wrong version will simply fail to load, and it is one of the most common reasons a freshly added plugin does nothing.

Changing your version with the Version Changer

When performance needs more than software

Optimized server software makes the most of the hardware it runs on, but there is a ceiling. Paper, Purpur, and Pufferfish squeeze more players out of the same CPU and memory, yet a large modpack, a busy public server, or a heavy redstone world eventually asks for more raw processing power and RAM than an optimized fork alone can supply. When the CPU stays pinned even on a lean, well-tuned setup, the software is no longer the limit. The hardware is.

At that point the machine underneath matters more than the JAR on top of it. Because Minecraft is so sensitive to raw processor speed, a modern high-clock CPU is what lets Paper, Forge, and Fabric stretch past the point an optimized fork can reach on its own.
