What are plugins and mods?
Most software can be extended beyond what it ships with. A web browser takes extensions, a content management system like WordPress runs on plugins, and a code editor loads its own add-ons. A Minecraft server works the same way: plugins and mods are add-on programs that change or add features without rewriting the core software. This is how a plain survival world becomes an economy server, a mini-game network, or a fully modded experience.
What is the difference between a plugin and a mod?
The difference is where the code runs. Plugins run on server software like Paper or Spigot and only change the server, so players connect with a normal, unmodified game client. Most mods run on Forge or Fabric and change the game itself, so players generally have to install the same mods to join. Plugins are the choice when you want anyone to be able to join easily, and mods are for a shared, transformed experience where everyone runs the same setup.

Where do mods and plugins come from?
Modrinth and CurseForge are the two main platforms that host and distribute Minecraft mods, plugins, and modpacks. Between them they index tens of thousands of projects, each with its supported versions, its dependencies, and a description of what it does. The installer on this page searches those catalogs and installs the file directly to your server, so you do not have to download a JAR from a website and upload it by hand.

Plugins cover almost every need a server has, and most public servers run a stack of them together. The common categories:

What are modpacks?
A modpack is a curated collection of mods bundled to work together, such as a tech pack, a magic pack, or a large "kitchen-sink" pack that mixes many themes. A single modpack can include hundreds of individual mods and change the game beyond recognition, adding new dimensions, machines, and progression systems. Because of that scale, a modpack is far more demanding to host than a plain or plugin-based server.
How much RAM do mods and plugins need?
Every mod and plugin you add uses extra memory and processing power. A handful of lightweight plugins is barely noticeable, but each mod in a pack loads its own content, so a large modpack can easily need four, six, or more gigabytes of RAM and a fast CPU to run smoothly. Are mods and plugins safe?
Mods and plugins run real code on your server with full access to it, so the source matters. A plugin pulled from a random site, or a pirated copy of a paid plugin, can hide malware, a backdoor, or a crypto-miner that quietly burns your server's resources.
Never install a cracked copy of a paid plugin. Pirated plugins are one of the most common ways a server picks up a backdoor. Stick to Modrinth and CurseForge, favor projects with an active history and plenty of downloads, and keep everything updated so known security holes stay patched.
Installing and managing them safely
Beyond choosing trusted sources, a few habits keep a modded server stable. Take a backup before adding or updating anything, so a bad plugin cannot cost you your world.
